In 1972, NASA launched the ERTS-1 satellite from California. It circled the globe for the following 6 years. It was the first space mission that studied Earth’s climate. By 2007, 17 space missions actively reported on the state of Earth’s resources, pollution and environment.

We live in a time when the health of our planet is tracked by the same scientists and space-age tech that explore deep space. We depend on NASA, NOAA and other scientific organizations to monitor our planet.

The Role Of Tech Today

However, since NASA’s first earth-space missions, the role of technology in our lives has become exponentially more complex. One on hand, technology creates more efficient systems and connects communities around the world. On the other hand, tech’s reputation often denotes loss of jobs and a deterioration of human relationships.

As we contend with climate change, we have an opportunity to tell a new story: tech leaders for the planet. The reality is that tech and climate are inextricably intertwined. Tech is future innovation and climate change is future risk. What’s more, tech is synonymous with economic growth, especially in Colorado where it accounts for 14% of the economy and 10% of the workforce. People will listen. By amplifying Colorado’s tech voice to push for the necessary climate action, we align the tech narrative with a story based in human experience guiding us toward a responsible future.

Signal’s Role

An integral part of Signal’s mission is developing the narratives of tech companies to include the way they participate in the climate dialogue. As we elevate the tech voice to call on government action, we believe tech companies have a great opportunity to include a new frontier of planetary awareness into their story.
